Mississippi River Towns is available.
The Book Born by the River: People of the Mississippi River Towns
The Mississippi River brought white explorers and traders to Minnesota in the late
1700s and early 1800s changing forever the lives of the native Ojibwa and Dakota
nations. As their lives were
changed, so were the lives
of the settlers. Now, one
hundred and fifty years later,
Born by the River: People of
the Mississippi River Towns
explores with fresh eyes how
the lives of the current
residents of the upper
Mississippi River towns have
changed. The enormous
impact that growth in
transportation and the
expansion of industry and
retail capitalism have had on
the river and the people that
live by it is shown through
first person interviews,
insightful paintings and
illuminating photographs.
As these interviews and
paintings show, the river and its people are still living through dramatic changes.
As Mark Twain introduced the Mississippi River to the world through the tales of his
young characters Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, Ron Merchant lets the people of 2005 tell
their personal tales of fishing, floating, swimming and growing up by the river. While
some lament the loss of childhood simplicity, most look to the future with expectations
of an improved connection to the river. Many herald the growing leisure use of the
Mississippi River with expanded marinas and condos as bringing life back to the river
passed by because of our love of the car.
Born by the River: People of the Mississippi River Towns invites you into the lives of
twenty-six people in eight locations on the river in Minnesota starting at the Headwaters
in Itasca State Park, through the towns of Jacobson, Saint Cloud and Elk River. After
stopping in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, you finish in the still
active historic towns of Red Wing and Winona. Through his award winning paintings
and interviews, Ron Merchant once again introduces you to life on the Mississippi.
